IRIS KOHLWEISS

Architektur der Wahrnehmung

Level 41 - Kirchengasse 41, 1070 Wien

Eröffnung - 11. Mai 2023, 18:30 Uhr

In the exhibition "Architecture of Perception," Iris Kohlweiss explores the visualization of spatial sensations. Her subjective experience of this information processing is translated into finely nuanced drawings, rendered in a language of color and form that becomes the bearer of meaning. This leads us beyond what we consider immediate reality.

"My drawings emerge from a state of alert, focused immersion. In this process, I sought out locations that appealed to me due to their uniquely diverse qualities. These ranged from a 900-year-old monastery library in Carinthia, a secluded farmhouse in Piedmont, a historic house in the Swiss Alps of Engadine, to a hotel suite in Altstadt Vienna.

Initially, physical locations served as the starting point for my work, but I soon began to engage increasingly with mental spaces—ideas, concepts, thought models, and realms that elude description through words.

The creation process can best be described as a dialogue in which I listen intently with my entire being.

I experience the work as a rising up, a disengaging and seizing of shapes and colors from a sea of infinite possibilities. The blank sheet of paper opens the door to a boundless realm of information. Once the first form has manifested, all others build upon it. They arrange themselves, come together, relate, complement, and evolve collectively."
